I'm so thankful that I've won USA Landscape Photographer of the Year 2016!
The prize is fantastic, and it will open up new avenues for my photography. But perhaps just as notable is the fact that some of the world's greatest living landscape photographers were on the judging panel, and that they rated my image so highly is a huge honor.
Charlie was quite cunning about arranging a call with me under unrelated pretenses, so it was a fun and welcome surprise when he informed me that the call was about the fact that I had won!

Timothy Aiken captured the Milky Way in the Sierra Nevada mountains.
“I stepped out of my tent in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, saw the Milky Way, and knew exactly what photo I wanted. It was incredibly cold, and a howling wind was funneling up the valley; so I worked quickly, using a head lamp to aid with composition. I processed the raw file twice – once for the foreground, and again for the sky, and combined the two images in Photoshop”. KIT Nikon D7100 with Nikon AF-S 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED lens Exposure 30 sec at 5/3.5, ISO 6,400.
